Week of 12/12/16

The students will have a test on "Teens and Technology Share a Future" on Wednesday, Dec. 14th.
We will start a new story called "The Black Hole of Technology" on Thursday.  The focus skills are persuasive techniques, such as position or claim, repetition, appeal to emotion, and appeal to reason.

There is a Spartan dress down day on Friday, December 16th for $1.00

The students will have a comprehension test of "Feathered Friend" on Monday, December 5th.  We will be going to Bloomsburg on Tuesday to see a play.  We will start a new story on Thursday, December 8th.  It is called "Teens and Technology Share a Future."  The focus comprehension skill is Author's perspective.

The students will be starting a new story called "Feathered Friend."  The focus comprehension skills are theme, stated theme, implied theme and compound words.  The test will be on Monday, December 5th.

The students will be doing a following directions activity on Monday with snacks.  There will be a test for the spelling bee on Tuesday (optional).  Wednesday - early dismissal 12:00.

Week of 11/14/16

The students received a copy of the PSSA terms on Friday, November 11th.  They will have a test on these terms on Friday, November 18th.  Please make sure your child studies these terms.    The test for "Black Cowboy, Wild Horses" will be on Tuesday, November 15th.

Week of 11/7/16

We are starting a new story on Tuesday.  It is called "Black Cowboy, Wild Horses."  The focus comprehension skills are plot, conflict, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.  The test for this story will be on Tuesday, November 15th.  We are also reviewing point of view on Tuesday and they will have a test on it on Wednesday, November 9th.

Week of 10/31/16

Our new story is called "Hachiko: The True Story of a Loyal Dog."  The focus comprehension skills are historical fiction, plot, setting, exposition, conflict, climax, resolution, theme and symbolize.  The test will be on Friday, November 4th. 

The students will receive their report cards on Friday, November 4th.

Week of 10/24/16

The students are continuing to work with the story "My Life With the Chimpanzees."  They will have a review on Wednesday.  The test will be on Thursday.

The Halloween parade will be on Friday at the stadium at 2:00 p.m.

Week of 10/17/16

The students will take a vocabulary in context test on Monday.  We did a review on Friday.  Then they will start a Unit 1 test.  It is a review of all of the skills we have been working on.  They will finish it on Tuesday.  We will be starting Unit 2 on Wednesday.  Our new story is called "My Life With the Chimpanzees."  The focus comprehension skills are first person narrative, memoir and author's purpose.  The test will be the week of October 24th.

Week of 10/10/16

No school on Monday for students!  Enjoy!

The students will have a review for the test on "I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid" on Tuesday.  The test will be on Wednesday.  They have a list of 20 PSSA terms.  They need to study these terms.  We will have a Jeopardy review of these terms on Thursday.  The test will be on Friday.  They will also have a vocab in context test on Friday.

The students will have a review of the story "Bad Boy" on Monday.  They will have a test on the story on Tuesday.  We will start a new story called "I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid" on Wednesday.  the focus skills are context clues, compare/contrast, theme, simile, metaphor and personification.

The students will have a test on "Michaela DePrince:  The War Orphan Who Became Ballerina" on Tuesday, September 27th.  We will start a new story "Bad Boy" on Wednesday.  The focus comprehension skills are context clues, central idea and author's purpose.  The test will be the week of 10/3/16.

Progress Reports go home on Wednesday, September 28th.

Week of 9/19/16

On Monday, the students will be finishing up some comics.  On Monday and Tuesday, they will also be working on fact and opinion. They will have a test on fact and opinion on Wednesday.  On Tuesday, they will start a new story called "Michaela DePrince:  The War Orphan Who Became a Ballerina."  The focus skills are vocab in context, conclusion, synonyms, antonyms, narrative nonfiction, biographical writing and direct quotations.  The test for the story will be on Tuesday, September 27th.

The student are working on the story "Brown Girl Dreaming."  The focus comprehension skills are first-person point of view, onomatopoeia, inferences, memoir, prose and stanza.  The first test will be on Thursday, September 15th.

Welcome to 6th grade

Welcome to 6th grade.  The students are doing a fabulous job!  They are taking Benchmark assessment tests.  We will start a new story called "Brown Girl Dreaming" on Thursday.  The test will be next Thursday, September 15th.

What a great class!  I'm looking forward to a great year!

Week of 5/16/16

Kick Butts day is on Monday, May 16th.  Wear comfortable shoes.  They will have a review on  Tuesday.  The test for "Arachne," Tortoise and Lion/Bear/Rabbit will be on Wednesday, May 18th. 
On Friday, May 20thwe will have a Veterans Day program.  We will then go to the cemeteries to put flags on the graves.

The students will have a comprehension test on Thursday, May 12, 2016.   On Friday, May 13th, we will be going to the high school.  They may use their lunch accounts for lunch.  If they want to purchase ice cream or snacks, They must use cash.

The students are working on fables and myths.  They are "Arachne,"  "Why the Tortoise's Shell Is Not Smooth,"  and "He Lion, Bruh Bear and Bruh Rabbit."  The focus comprehension skills are cause/effect,  myths, purpose and personification.  The test will be on Wednesday or Thursday next week.

The students will be working on "My Three Words" on Monday, May 9th.

The students have been working on analogies and their common core terms.  They will have a test on both of these on Tuesday, April 5th.  Please make sure they study the terms.  They will have a test on author's purpose on Thursday, April 7th.  They will get a study paper on prefixes and suffixes on Tuesday.  They will have a test on these on Friday, April 8th.

We will be preparing for the PSSA tests.  On Monday, the students will receive a list of PSSA/Common Core terms and definitions.  They will have a test on these on Tuesday, April 5th.  Please make sure your child studies these terms and definitions.  We will also be working on multiple meaning words, analogies and author's purpose.  They will have a test on author's purpose and analogies next week.

The students will have a figurative language terms test on Monday, March 14th.  They will have a figurative language test and a test on personification/onomatopoeia/alliteration on Wednesday, March 16th.  We will start Unit 4 - poetry on Thursday.  The first two poems are "Oranges" and "Ode to Family Photos."

The Figurative Language terms test will  be on Monday, March 14th.  They received these terms either Monday or Tuesday.

We are starting a unit on figurative language.  The terms we will be learning are similes, metaphors, personification, hyperboles, alliteration, onomatopoeia and idioms.  They will have a terms test on Friday, March 11th.  Make sure your child studies the terms and definitions.  The test on the application of the skills will be on Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Week of 2/29/16

On Monday they were finishing their ACES paper.  Tuesday they will be reviewing the comprehension skills - drawing conclusions, compare/contrast, theme and comparing author's style.  They will have a test on these skills on Wednesday.  We will review the PSSA terms on Thursday using a game.  They will have a test on the PSSA terms on Friday.  Please make sure they study.

The students will have a test on "The Pigman and Me" on Wednesday, February 24th.  We will be working on Text Dependent Analysis (TDA) for the next 5 school days.  It is using the information from what you read to write an answer to a question.  they also received a new PSSA terms paper.  Have your child study it.  They will have a test on these terms next week.

The students are finishing their test on "Langston Terrace" on Wednesday.  We will start a new story called "Pigman and Me" on Thursday.  The focus comprehension skills are main idea and mood.  The test for this story will be on Wednesday, February 24th.

The Vocabulary in Context and Character Traits tests will be on Thursday, January 28th.  Please make sure your child studies the character traits paper.  We will start the story "Jackie Robinson: Justice at Last" on Friday, January 29th.

On Monday, the students will be reviewing vocabulary in context and studying character traits.  They will have a test on both of these on Tuesday.  Make sure your child studies the traits.  They will have to write down 25 character traits for the test.  We will start the story "Jackie Robinson:  Justice at Last" on Wednesday.  The focus comprehension skills are author's purpose and expository essay.  The test for that story will be on Monday, February 1st.  They will also get a story map to do with  this story.  It will be due on Wednesday, February 3rd.

The students started the story "Water" on Tuesday.  It is a story about Helen Keller.  The focus comprehension skills are author's purpose and autobiographical essay.  The test will be on Friday, January 22nd.

Week of 1/11/16

The students will take the test on "Zlata's Diary" on Monday, January 11th.  On Tuesday we will be reviewing comprehension skills.  They will take a test on those comprehension skills on Wednesday.
They received a list of character traits.  Please make sure they study this list.  They will have to write down 25 character traits for a test.  We will be reviewing Vocabulary in contest.  They will have a test on this also.  Periods 4, 5 and 6 will take these on  Thursday.  Periods 1, 2 and 3 will take these on Friday.
