Week of 12/15/14

Sorry, I'm a bit late.  I was out of school sick and I couldn't log on to my account.  The students went to see a play in Bloomsburg on Tuesday.  I was very disappointed that I could not attend.  The students will have two tests on Friday, December 19th.  They did know about these last week.  The first will be character traits.  They will have to list 25 character traits from a very long list that I gave to them  They  will also have a vocabulary in context test.   Have a great weekend!

Week of 12/8/14

The students will have a comprehension test on Monday on the stories "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend."  We will start the story "Zlata's Diary" on Tuesday.  The focus skills are nonfiction, articles and essays.  The test for "Zlata's Diary" will be on Wednesday, December 17th.  The students will receive a character traits paper on Wednesday.  We will be discussing character traits.  They will have a test on character traits on Thursday, December 18th.  We will also be working on vocabulary in context.  The test for this will also be on the 18th.  On Tuesday, December 16th we will be going to the Alvina Krause Theater in Bloomsburg to see a play called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas."  The students will come to school and go home from school on their regular school buses.  The dress for the play will be dress code appropriate or dress up. (No spaghetti straps)  Please note:  weather is questionable and the holidays are here.  There might need to be some adjustments in these plans.  Thank you for understanding!

Week of 12/2/14

I hope everyone had terrific holiday!  We are starting two new stories called "The Fun They Had" and Feathered Friend."  The focus comprehension skills are setting and theme.  The comprehension test will be on Monday, December 8th.  Have a great week!

Week of 11/24/14

Monday we will be doing a following directions activity using snacks.  The students will be making
"Gobble, Gobble Crunchers."  The best part is that they will get to eat their treats!  We are doing miscellaneous reading activities on Tuesday.   On Wednesday, the students are dismissed at 1:00 p.m.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!  The students are off from Thursday, November 27th until December 1st.  We return to school on Tuesday, December 2nd.  Enjoy!!!

Week of 11/17/14

The students will have a comprehension test on "Aaron's Gift" on Monday, November 17th.  We will review the PSSA terms on Wednesday using the Eggspert game.  They will review the PSSA terms on Thursday with a Jeopardy game.  The test on the PSSA terms will be on Friday, November 21st.  Please make sure your child studies these terms.  They received the terms on Thursday, November 13th.  Have a great week!

Week of 11/11/14

We are starting a new story on Tuesday, November 11th.  The name of the story is "Aaron's Gift."  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and setting.  The test will be on Monday, November 17th.  The students will be receiving a new PSSA terms paper on Wednesday.  The test on these terms will be next week.  Please make sure that your child starts studying.  Have a great week!

Week of 11/3/14

We are starting a new story called "The All-American Slurp."  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and theme.  The comprehension test will be on Friday, November 7th.  Report cards for the first marking period will also go home on Friday.  Have a great week!

Week of 10/27/14

We are working on the story "Zlateh the Goat."  The focus comprehension skills are internal and external conflict, making inferences and conflict/resolution.  The test will be on Wednesday, October 29th.  This will be the first test for the second marking period.  Future teachers from Bloomsburg University will be here to do an activity in the morning on Friday, October 31st.  The Halloween parties will be in the afternoon.  The parade is at 2:00 p.m. Have a great week!!!

Week of 10/20/14

The students are working on the story "Dragon, Dragon."  They will have a comprehension test on Wednesday, October 22nd.  On Wednesday, they will receive a story map for "Dragon, Dragon."  This is due on Wednesday, October 29th.  This will be the first grade for the second marking period.
On Thursday of this week we will be starting a new story "Zlateh the Goat."  The focus comprehension skills are making inferences, conflict and resolution.  The test for this story will be on Wednesday, October 29th.  This will also be for the second marking period.  Picture retakes are on Thursday, October 23rd. Have a great week!!!

Week of 10/14/14

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend.  We will be reviewing author's point of view and the 20 PSSA terms on Tuesday.  The student's have a test on these two reading skills on Wednesday, October 15th.  Make sure your child studies the PSSA terms.  They could easily get a 100 on the test if they study.  We are starting Unit 2 - Short Stories.   On Thursday, October 16th, we will begin a new story called "Dragon, Dragon."  The focus comprehension skills are making inferences, and direct and indirect characterization.  The test for this story will be on Wednesday, October 22nd.  Have a great week!

Week of 10/6/14

The test for "Names/Nombres" and "The Lady and the Spider" will be on Monday, October 6th.   The students also have a comprehension test on Wednesday, October 8th.  This will be on plot (exposition, conflict, rising and falling action, climax and resollution), tone and author's perspective.  The students will receive a PSSA terms paper on  Monday.  They should start studying these terms.  They will have a test next week.  We will also be reviewing author's perspective this week.  The students have an early dismissal on Friday, October 10th.  They will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.  Have a great week!!!

Week of 9/22/14

We started two new stories this week.  They are both about monkeys. The focus comprehension skills are fiction and nonfiction.  We will compare and contrast both stories.  They will have a test on both stories on Friday, September 26th.  Progress reports will go home on Friday.  Have a great week!

The students are starting a new story on Tuesday, September 9th.  It is called "The Drive-In Movies."  The focus comprehension skills are making predictions, narrator and point of view.  The test for this story will be on Monday, September 15th.

Week of 8/27/14 and week of 9/2/14

Today, Wednesday, we are taking a look at our reading books and features.  We will begin the story "Stray" today.  The focus comprehension skills are making predictions, plot (Exposition, conflict, rising and falling action, climax and resolution) and fiction and nonfiction.  The test on "Stray" will be on Friday, September  5th.  No school on Monday, September 1st - Labor Day.   Have a great week and 3 day weekend!

Week of 8/25/14

Week of 5/12/14

We will be reviewing author's purpose, personification, alliteration and Onomatopoeia on Monday.   They will have 2 tests on these skills on Tuesday.  We will be seeing the band/chorus concert on Wednesday morning.  We will be putting the flags on the graves on Friday morning.  There is a school-wide pep rally in the afternoon on Friday.  We are also working on the play "Phantom Tollbooth."  Have a great week!

Week of 5/5/14

We will be reviewing comprehension skills - context clues, figurative language, rhythm/rhyme and drama on Monday.  They will have a test on those skills on Tuesday, May 6th.  They will be reviewing vocabulary in context and analogies Wednesdy and Thursday.  They will have a test on those skills on Friday, May 9th.  They have a story map that is due on Thursday.  Have a great week!!!

Week of 4/28/14

The students are working on fables, folk tales and myths.  They will have a test on "Arachne," "Why the Tortoise's Shell is Not Smooth," and "He Lion, Bruh Bear and Bruh Rabbit" on Thursday,
May 1st.  They will be doing Dibels on Tuesday during Reading class.  We will go over to visit the high school on Friday, May 2nd.  Have a great week!

Week of 4/21/14

The students can wear gym clothes on Monday - it is Teens Against Tobacco day.  We are working on Fables and Folk Tales.  The students will have a test on "Tiger," "Ant," "Lion" and "Boy" on Wednesday, April 23rd.  Have a nice Easter!

Week of 4/14/14

We are still working on the poems "Oranges" and "Ode to Family Photographs."  The comprehension test will be on Tuesday, April 15th.  We will be working on Unit 6, Folk Literature on Wednesday.  The four folk tales are "The Tiger Who Would Be King," "The Ant and the Dove," "The Lion and the Bulls" and "A Crippled Boy."  The focus comprehension skills are cause/effect and fables/folk tales. 
The test for these will be on Wednesday, April 23rd.  There is no school on Friday. Have a super Easter!

Week of 4/7/14

We finished the PSSA's on Monday.  Everyone was thrilled.  They did a great job!!!!  We had a super time on our field trip to the Franklin Institute on Tuesday.  Thank you PTO!  On Wednesday we started Unit 4 - Poetry.  The two poems we are concentrating on are "Oranges" and "Ode to Family Photographs."  The focus comprehension skills are tone, rhymes, free verse and forms of poetry.  The students will have a test on these two poems on Tuesday, April 15th.  Have a great week!

Week of 3/24/14

We will be working on our PSSA skills this week.  We will play a game of Jeopardy on Tuesday to review the PSSA terms.  The students have a test on the PSSA terms on Wednesday, March 26th.  The PSSA test will begin on Friday, March 28th.  Please make sure that your children get a good nights sleep and has a good breakfast before school.  The test will continue for the whole week of March 31st.  Have a great week!

Week of 3/17/14

Week of 3/10/14

The students took two tests on figurative language. One was the terms and the other was applying the skills.  We are working on PSSA terms and skills.  The students will have a review of comprehension skills from the third unit.  They are drawing conclusions, compare/contrast, theme and author's styles.  They will have a test on these skills on Friday, March 14th.  Have a great week!

Week of 3/3/14

This week we will be working on figurative language skills.  They are metaphor, simile, personification, idiom, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole.  The students will  have 2 tests on figurative language on Monday, March 10th.  On the first test, they will have to identify which figurative language it is.  On the second test they will have to match the term to its definition.  This is an easy 100 if they study the terms and definitions.  I am giving a retest of the prefix and suffix test on Thursday, March 6th.  This is for any student that did not get a 100 on the first test.

Week of 2/24/14

We are starting a new story on Monday, February 24th.  It is called "The Pigman and Me."  The focus comprehension skills are main idea/details and mood of the story.  The test will be on Friday, February 28th.  The students recieved a paper with prefixes and suffixes.  They need to study these.  They will have a test on them on Thursday, February 27th.  It is an easy way to get a 100.  The students will receive their progress reports on Friday.  Have a great week!

The students will have a test on the story "Jackie Robinson:  Justice at Last" on Tuesday, February 4th.  On Wednesday the students will be taking the PSSA ELA Writing Assessment.  The students have a story map that is due on Thursday, February 6th.  We will start a new story on Thursday.  It is called "Langston Terrace."  The focus comprehension skills are Biography/Autobiography, Main Idea and Author's Influences.  The test for this story will be on Wednesday, February 12th.

Week of 1/13/13

We started a new story called "Zlata's Diary."  The focus comprehension skills are author's influences, style and purpose.  Unit 3 stories are all nonfiction (true.)  I have copies of this book which would be great for Accelerated Reader.  The test will be on Thursday, January 16th.  On Friday we will start a story called "Water."  It is about Helen Keller.  The focus comprehension skills are author's purpose and autobiographical essay.  Have a great week!!!
