Week of 1/3/12

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and vacation. On Tuesday, January 3rd the sixth grade classes will be doing the DIBELS test during reading class. We will start on Wednesday with comparing literary works. Our two new stories are "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend." Our comprehension skills will be comparing settings and themes. We will have a test on these stories during the week of January 12th. Have a great week!

Week of 12/19/11

The students will have a test on the PSSA terms # 2 on Tuesday, December 20th. We will be doing the Jeopardy game as a review on Monday. The Christmas parties will be on Thursday, December 22nd from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. The students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, December 23rd. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Week of 12/12/11

It's a busy week at the elementary. We are preparing for the concert. The third through sixth grade concert will be on Thursday, December 15th at 9:30 a.m. in the high school auditorium. The band and chorus concert will be held on Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 pm. We are finishing our accelerated reader book "Number the Stars." We are also working on our PSSA Buckle down books. The students should be studying their PSSA terms. They will have a test on Tuesday, December 20th. Have a great week!

Week of 12/5/11

Sixth grade students will go to Santa's shop on Monday, December 5th. They will have a test on the story "Aaron's Gift" on Monday, December 5th. On Wednesday, December 7th we will be going to the Alvina Krause theatre in Bloomsburg to see Truman Capote's play called "Holiday Memories." This will be a wonderful experience for the students. Progress reports go home on Friday, December 9th. We are reading the novel "Number the Stars." This can be used for accelerated reader points. The students need to get 10 points per marking period. We are also working on our PSSA Buckle Down books. The students need to study their PSSA terms 2 paper.

Week of 11/ 28/11

I hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving!!! We are starting a new story called "Aaron's Gift." Our comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and the setting of the story. The test on this story will be on Monday, December 5th. We are also reading the novel "Number the Stars." Don't forget that the students need 10 accelerated reading points for the marking period. Week of 11/21/11

On Monday the sixth grade reading classes will be following directions. They will be making a Thanksgiving treat. The best part is eating it when they are finished. On Tuesday, we will continue to read our novel "Number the Stars." The students will be getting out early on Wednesday the 23rd. Dismissal will be at 11:45 a.m. No school - Thursday, Friday and Monday. I will see the students again on Tuesday, November 29th. I hope everyone has a terrific Thanksgiving!!!

Week of 11/14/11

The students are working a story called "The All American Slurp." On Tuesday, they will have DARE during reading class. We are also working on a novel called "Number the Stars." When we finish, they can use this for accelerated reader points. They will have a comprehension test on "The All American Slurp" on Thursday, November 17th. Have a great week!

Week of 11/7/11

On Monday we will be starting a novel called "Number the Stars." When we are finished, the students can use this book towards accelerated reader points. Each child needs to get 10 points per marking period. This will count as a grade in reading class. On Tuesday we are doing PSSA practice in our books p. 241 - 248. Tuesday is make-up day for pictures. On Wednesday we will be starting a new story called "The All American Slurp." Friday is an Act 80 day. No school for students. Have a great week!

Week of 10/31/11

The students are reading a story called "Zlateh the Goat." Our comprehension skills are making inferences and internal and external conflict. They will have a test on the story on Friday, November 4th. Report cards go home on Friday, November 4th. Have a great week!

Week of 10/24/11

The students worked on PSSA prep skills from their book on Monday. On Tuesday we did a review of PSSA terms using a jeopardy game. Wednesday they had a test on PSSA terms. The children received a story map to do for "Dragon, Dragon." This will be used as a grade and is due on Tuesday, November 1st. On Thursday and Friday we will be working on PSSA Buckle Down books. They will have an end of the unit test on vocabulary in context. Halloween parties begin at 1:45 pm on Friday afternoon. The parade will start at 2:15 pm.

week of 10/17/11

We started the story "Dragon, Dragon" on Friday. We will have a test on the story on Thursday, October 20th. Friday will be an Act 80 day. The students will get out of school at 11:45. On Friday they will have the walk for Diabetes. Party money is due for the first 2 parties. ($4.00) Accelerated Reader points will be taken on Monday, October 24th. The students need ten points for the marking period. The students knew about this since the second week of school.

week of 10/10/11

Monday, October 10th is a make-up day. They will be working on PSSA books that we have in sixth grade. The students will have DARE during my class on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will be reviewing the comprehension skills that we learned in sixth grade. On Thursday, the students will be taking a test on the comprehension skills from Wednesday. On Friday, we will be starting
Unit 2 - short stories. Our first story will be "Dragon, Dragon." Have a great week!

Accelerated Reader

The students are responsible for earning 10 accelerated reader points per marking period. These points are due on Monday, October 24th for the first marking period. This will count towards a grade in reading class. Please check with your child to make sure he/she is reading their books. Have a great day!

Week of 10/3/11

We will be starting two new stories. They are "Names/Nombres" and "The Lady and the Spider." Our focus comprehension skills are Fact/Opinion and the Tone of the story. The students will have a test on Fact and Opinion on Wednesday, October 5th. They will have a comprehension test on the two stories on Friday, October 7th. There is a Sixth Grade Fun Night on Friday, October 7th from 6 to 9 pm at the high school. There will be basketball, volleyball, swimming, dodgeball and movies. It is free. They will have drinks and snacks available for a small fee. Have a great week!

Week of 9/26/11

We will be working on two stories this week. They are "My Papa, Mark Twain" and "Stage Fright."
Our focus comprehension skills are Fact/Opinion and Author's Perspective. The students will have a test on these stories on Friday, September 30th. Wow! The first month really flew by. They are a super group of sixth graders. Progress reports will be sent home on Friday, September 30th. Have a great week!

Week of 9/19/11

We started two stories about monkeys. One is fiction and one is nonfiction. They will have a comprehension test on these two stories on Wednesday, September 21st. On Thursday, the 22nd, they will have a vocabulary test. The vocabulary will be from "Stray," "Drive-in Movies," and "Monkeys." We have a pep rally on Friday. They should wear their red and blue!! I hope everyone was safe and sound during Thursday's storm. The student's took their test on "Stray" on Friday. We will be starting a new story called "Drive-In Movies" on Monday. The story map of "Stray" is due on Tuesday. They will have a comprehension test on "Drive-In Movies" on Thursday. On Friday we will start two new stories on monkeys. Have a great week!

Week of 9/6/11

Welcome back to school!!! The first week was great! The students seem like terrific students. We are working on the story "Stray." The students will have a test on "Stray" on Thursday. They also have to do a story map of "Stray." It is due on Tuesday, September 13th. Each student has a calendar in the front of their assignment book. This is where the teachers will be writing down any missed assignments or detentions. Have a great week!

Week of 5/9/11

On Monday, we will be reviewing our comprehension skills. They will have a test on these skills on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will be reviewing more of our comprehension skills. They will have a test on these skills on Thursday. These are comprehension skills that we have been working on all year. It is not something they can study at home. They need to pay close attention on the review days. The tests will be very similar to the reviews. We will be visiting the high school on Tuesday. Thursday afternoon will be "Kick Butts" (cigarettes) activities at the high school. Have a great week!

Week of 5/2/11

The students had a great time on our field trip to Baltimore Inner Harbor. The students will have a test on the three stories - "Arachne," "Tortoise," and Lion/Bear/Rabbit on Friday, May 6th. They are all short stories. Don't forget that 6th grade graduation is on Wednesday, May 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. See you there!

Week of 4/18/11

The students are working on folk tales and fables in Unit 6. We are working on "The Tiger Who Would Be King," "The Ant and the Dove," "The Lion and the Bulls," and "A Crippled Boy." They will have a test on these stories on Thursday, April 21st. We have a Brainshow program on Wednesday. There will not be school on Friday, April 22nd and Monday, April 25th. Have a super Easter and a great week!

Week of 4/11/11

We started Unit 4 - poetry. The students will have a test on Tuesday. It will be on the two poems - "Oranges" and "Ode to Family Photos." They will also have a test on Friday. It will be on three poems - "Adventures of Isabel," "Wilbur and Orville Wright" and "Ankylosaurus." Have a great week!

Week of 4/4/11

The students will take a comprehension test on Wednesday. The stories are "Pigman and Me," "Letter from a Concentration Camp" and "Letter to Scottie." We have an assembly scheduled for Friday, April 8th about the SPCA. The story map of "Langston Terrace" will be their first grade for the fourth marking period. We are starting Unit 4 in our reading books. This is a great unit on poetry. Have a great week!

Week of 3/28/11

The students will be starting a new story on Monday. It is called "The Pigman and Me." We will also be working on two short stories. They are called "Letter from a Concentration Camp" and "Letter to Scottie." They will have the test for these stories on Monday, April 4th. The students are also to be working on a story map for the story "Langston Terrace." It is due on Friday, April 1st. DARE graduation is on Wednesday, March 30th at 7:00 at the high school auditorium. Students are to be there at 6:45 p.m. They are to wear their DARE shirts. Have a great week!

The students are doing a SUPER job on their PSSAs. They have one more section to do on Monday, March 21st. We will be starting a new story called "Langston Terrace." They will have a test on this story on Friday, March 25th. Have a great week!

Week of 3/14/11

The students will take a test on the PSSA terms on Monday, March 14th. The PSSA tests will be given on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Please make sure your child is well rested and has a good breakfast. Please encourage your child to do his/her best. Have a great week!

The students will be getting new PSSA terms on Monday, March 7th. We will be working on them in class and they should study them at home. They will have a test on these terms on Monday, March 14th. If they study the terms, this should help their grade. We will be preparing for the PSSA test all week. The PSSA tests will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday March 15th - 17th. The students will have a test on the story "Jackie Robinson: Justice at Last" on Monday, February 28th. The next two weeks we will be preparing for the PSSA tests. On Friday, March 4th, Bloomsburg University students will be here to do a Dr. Seuss activity with the students. Have a great week!

Week of 1/31/11

Wow! It's February on Tuesday! On Monday we will have a test on our comprehension skills. We had an intense review on Friday. We will be starting a new story on Tuesday. It is an excerpt from a great novel. It is called "Zlata's Diary." It would be a great choice as an Accelerated Reading book. If we don't have any bad weather, the test will be on Monday, February 7th. Have a great week!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a terrific holiday. We are working on a new story called "Aaron's Gift." We are also taking the 4 Sight tests on Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, January 11th, we will have DARE during reading class. Our test for "Aaron's Gift" will be on Wednesday, January 12th. The students do not have shool on Friday, January 14th and Monday, January 17th due to an Act 80 day and an In-service day. Have a great 2 weeks!
