Week of 1/4/16

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday!

The students will be starting Unit 3 - Nonfiction.  The first story is "Zlata's Diary."  The comprehension skills are author's influences/styles/purpose and nonfiction.  The test will be on Friday, January 8th.  Have a great week!

The test for "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend" will be on Tuesday, December 22nd.

Week of 12/14/15 and 12/21/15

The students will start two new stories.  They are "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend."  The focus comprehension skills are setting and theme.  The test will be on Monday, December 21st.

Tuesday - December 22 - Wear an ugly Christmas sweater and jeans.

Wednesday - December 23rd - Early dismissal at 1:00 p.m.

Week of 12/7/15

The students will have a test on "Aaron's Gift" on Tuesday, December 8th.  We will be reviewing the PSSA terms on Wednesday and Thursday using an Eggspert game and a Jeopardy game. They will have a test on these terms on Friday, December 11th.  Please make sure your child studies these terms.  It is an easy 100 - if they study.

Week of 12/1/15

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break!

We will start a new story called "Aaron's Gift" on Tuesday, December 1st.  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and setting.  The test will be on Tuesday, December 8th.  Remind your child to study the PSSA terms.  That test will be next week.

We are going to the Alvina Krause Theater in Bloomsburg to see the play "A Christmas Story" on Tuesday, December 2nd.  This will be done during the regular school day.  The students must be dress code appropriate or better.

Week of 11/23/15

On Monday, November 23rd we will be following directions by making "Gobble, Gobble Crunchers" out of candy and snacks.  On Tuesday, we will take the spelling bee test if your child is interested. This is optional.  They will be reviewing comprehension skills on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Tuesday - Wear sweatpants to support Diabetes.  Please bring $1.00.  Thank you!

Wednesday - Early dismissal at 1:00 p.m.

Week of 11/16/15

The students will continue working of the story "The All-American Slurp."  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and theme.  The test will be on Thursday,
 November 19th.  They will be receiving a new PSSA terms sheet on Friday.

Week of 11/9/15

Monday, November 9th - no school for students - Parent/Teacher conferences.

The students will take the comprehension test for "Zlateh the Goat" on Wednesday, November 11th.  The "Dragon, Dragon" story map is due on Wednesday. They will start the story "The All-American Slurp" on Thursday.  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and theme. 

Week of 11/2/15

On Monday, the students will take a test on "Dragon, Dragon."  On Tuesday, the students will start a new story called "Zlateh the Goat."  The focus comprehension skills are making inference, internal conflict and external conflict.  The test for "Zlateh the Goat" will be on Wednesday, November 11th.

No school for students on Monday, November 9th.

Week of 10/26/15

We will be starting Unit 2 - Short Stories.  The first story is called "Dragon, Dragon."  The focus comprehension skills are making inferences and direct and indirect characterization.   The test for this story will be on Monday, November 2nd. 

On Friday, future teachers from Bloomsburg will be in during the morning to do an activity with the students.  In the afternoon we will have the Fall Festival.  The students can bring in costumes for the afternoon. 

Week of 10/19/15

The students will have a test on "My Papa, Mark Twain" and "Stage Fright" on Monday, October 19th.  We will be reviewing our comprehension skills from the first unit on Tuesday.  They are plot (exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution), author's perspective and tone.  They will have a test on these skills on Wednesday, October 21st.  On Friday, October 16th, the students received a list of PSSA terms.  They will have a test on these terms and author's point of view on Friday, October 23rd.  We will be reviewing both of these things all week.  Please make sure your child studies the PSSA terms.  This can be an easy 100 if they study.  If they don't study, it could turn out to be a bad grade.  There are only 20 terms. 

The book fair will be held this week.  My homeroom will go to the book fair on Wednesday.  Parents can shop at the book fair on Monday from 4 - 7.

We are working on the stories "Names/Nombres" and "The Lady and the Spider.  The focus comprehension skills are fact/opinion and tone.  The test will be on Thursday, October 8th.  They will also have a test on fact/opinion on that day. 
On Monday the students are to wear blue to fight bullying.
Friday, October 9th is an early dismissal day for the students.
Monday, October 12th is an in-service day.  No school for the students.

We are still working on the two stories "Why Monkeys Live in Trees" and "The Case of the Monkeys That Fell From the Trees." The focus comprehension skills are fiction and nonfiction.  The test will be on Wednesday, September 30th.  On Thursday, we will be starting the story "Names/Nombres."  The focus comprehension skills are fact/opinion and tone.  Next week is spirit week.  We will have a pep rally on Friday. (Spartan Pride Day)

The students will have a comprehension test on "Drive-In Movies" on Wednesday, September 23rd.  Our next two stories are fiction and nonfiction.  The two stories are "Why Monkeys Live in Trees" and "The Case of the Monkeys that Fell From the Trees."  The test for these two stories will be on Wednesday, September 30th.

The students will have a test on "Stray" on Monday, September 14th.  We will be starting the story "Drive-In Movies"  on Tuesday.  The focus comprehension skills are making predictions, narrator and point of view.  The test will be on Wednesday, September 23rd.  We will be doing Dibels on Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon.

We are working on the story "Stray."  The comprehension skills are plot (exposition, conflict, rising and falling action, climax and resolution) and making predictions.  The test for "Stray" will be on Monday, September 14th.

The students will receive a story map on Thursday, September 10th (character, setting, problems, important events and resolution).  It will be due on Thursday, September 17th.

Week of 8/31/15

Welcome to sixth grade!  I am looking forward to a super year!  The students will be starting their first story on Friday, September 4th.  It is called "Stray."  The focus comprehension skills are making predictions and plot (exposition, conflict, rising and falling action, climax and resolution).  The test for this story will be on Friday, September 11th. 

We will have a pep rally on Friday, September 4th.  Wear your Spartan pride clothing!
There will be no school on Monday, September 7th.

Graduation

Graduation is Thursday, May 21st.  The upper doors to the high school will open at 5:30 p.m.  No one will be admitted without a ticket.  Students need to arrive between 5:30 - 5:45.  They should report to the cafeteria.  After graduation you can meet your child in the cafeteria to take pictures.

Week of 4/27/15

The field trip was great!  Thank you to all of the parents that were able to chaperone!  We really appreciate it!

The students are working on fables, folk tales and myths.  They are "Arachne," "Why the Tortoise's Shell is Not Smooth" and "He Lion, Bruh Bear and Bruh Rabbit."  The test will be on Tuesday,
 May 5th.

Week of 4/6/15

We are very busy prepping for the PSSA tests next week.  The students will have a test on prefixes and suffixes on Friday, April 10th.  The PSSA tests are next week on Tuesday (14th), Wednesday (15th) and Thursday (16th).  They will also be the following week on Tuesday (21st), Wednesday (22nd) and Thursday (23rd).  Please make sure your child has plenty of rest and has a good breakfast.  Please encourage them to do their very BEST!

Week of 3/30/15

The students will have a comprehension test on Tuesday, March 31st.  The fables and folk tales are "The Tiger Who Would be King," The Ant and the Dove," "The Lion and the Bulls" and "A Crippled Boy."  They will have a test on the PSSA terms on Wednesday, April 1st.  If they study the twenty terms, it should be an easy 100%.We will be working on prepping for the PSSA test on Wednesday and Thursday.

Week of 3/23/15

The students will have a test on the two poems "Oranges" and "Ode to Family Photographs" on Monday.  They will start Folk Literature - Unit 6 on Tuesday.  We will be working on "The tiger Who Would be King," "The Ant and the Dove," "The Lion and the Bulls" and "A Crippled Boy."  The focus comprehension skills are cause/effect, fables and folk tales.   The test for the fables and folk tales will be on Tuesday, March 31st.   The students are getting a new PSSA terms sheet on Monday, March 23rd.  The test on the terms will be on Wednesday, April 1st.

The students will be starting a new Unit on Poetry.  The focus comprehension skills are tone, rhymes and free verse.  They will have a test on "Oranges" and "Ode to Family Photographs" on Friday, March 20th. 

On Wednesday, March 18th they will have a test on the PSSA/Common Core terms.  They received the list  last week.  Make sure they study.

The students will be receiving new common core terms on Monday.  We will be working on PSSA/Common Core terms all week.  They will have a test on these terms on Tuesday, March 10th.  On Tuesday, March 3rd, we will be reviewing our comprehension skills.  We will have a test on Wednesday, March 4th.  The comprehension skills are drawing conclusions, compare/contrast, theme and comparing author's style.  Thursday and Friday we will be working on PSSA/Common Core words/skills.

Week of 2/23/15

The students will have Brainshow Mania on Wednesday, February 25th.  The students will have a test on the Figurative Language terms on Thursday, February 26th.  They need to study for this.  They will also have a test on personification, alliteration and onomatopoeia on Thursday.  On Friday, they will have a test on figurative language in context.  They will receive a paper on Friday with some Common Core terms on it.

The students will take the test "Pigman and Me" on Wednesday, February 18th.  We will be working on figurative language.  This consists of metaphor, simile, alliteration, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and idiom.  The students will receive a list of figurative language terms and their definitions.   The test for the terms will be on Thursday, February 26th.  They will also have a test on personification, alliteration and onomatopoeia on that day.  They will have  a test on figurative language in context on Friday, February 27th.

Week of 2/9/15

The students will have a test on the story "The Pigman and ME" on Wednesday, February 11th.  The focus comprehension skills are main idea, details and mood. 

The students will be watching the movie "42" (The Jackie Robinson story) on Thursday, February 12th.  They need to have a signed permission slip to watch the movie.  In the afternoon, we will have the Valentine party.  They are also doing pictures for the yearbook - if your child is involved in any activities/sports/etc.

Friday, February 13th is an Act 80 day - no school for students.

Monday, February 16th is President's Day - No school.

The students will have a test on "Langston Terrace" on Wednesday, Febrauary 4th.  The new story will be "The Pigman and Me."  The focus comprehension skills are main idea, details and mood.  The test for this story will be on Wednesday, February 11th. 

Brainshow Mania is on Friday, February 6th.  It is also "Jeans for a Cause " day!  Students are to bring in $1.00 and then they can wear jeans.

On Monday the students will have a test on "Jackie Robinson:  Justice at Last."   A new story will start on Tuesday, January 27th.  It is called "Langston Terrace."  The focus comprehension skills are biography, autobiography, main idea, details, and author's influences.  The test will be on Friday, January 30th.  The students received a story map for "Jackie Robinson."  It is due on Thursday, January 29th.   

Report cards are to go home on Thursday, January 29th.

Week of 1/19/14

The students will have a comprehension test on "Water" on Monday, January 19th.  This will be the first grade for the third marking period.   We start "Jackie Robinson: Justice at Last" on Tuesday.  The focus comprehension skills are author's purpose and expository essay.   On Thursday the students will receive a story map paper.  It is due on Thursday, January 29th.   The students will have the test on Monday, January 26th.

Good news! - The students are allowed to wear jeans and spirit shirts on Thursday, January 22nd.  PTO will be having a show on that date.  It is called "Brainshow Mania."
