Week of 12/16/13

The students will be reviewing vocabulary in context and comprehension skills p. 334 - 340 on Monday.  On Tuesday we will be going to the Alvina Krause Theatre in Bloomsburg.  We will be seeing the play "A Very Special Christmas Special."  Thank you to the district for giving us this wonderful opportunity.  On Wednesday, they will have a test on vocabulary in context and character traits.  They will have to write down 25 character traits from the list that I gave them last Wednesday.  Please encourage your child to be prepared.  They will have a PSSA review on Thursday.  PTO sponsored a program for the students on Thursday.

Due to the snow day on Tuesday, the test for "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend" will be on Thursday, December 12th.

Week of 12/9/13

We are working on the stories "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend."  Our focus comprehension skills are direct and indirect characterization, setting and theme.  They have a test on the two stories on Wednesday, December 11th.  On Wednesday, they will receive a paper on character traits.  They need to study these words.  They will have a test on character traits next Wednesday, December 18th.  We are always working on vocabulary in context.  They will have a test on this next Wednesday also.  Have a great week!

Week of 12/3/13

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday.  On Tuesday, we will be starting two new stories.  They are called "The Fun They Had" and "Feathered Friend."  Our focus comprehension skills are setting and theme.  We will be comparing and contrasting the literary works.  The test for these two stories will be on Wednesday, December 11th.  Grades 3 - 6 concert will be on Friday, December 6th at 9:30 a.m. in the high school auditorium. 

Week of 11/25/13

The students will have a comprehension test on the story "Aaron's Gift" on Monday, November 25th.

We will be doing a following directions activity on Tuesday, November 26th.  It will taste delicious also!!!

The students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday!

Week of 11/18/13

Parent conferences will be on Monday, November 18th.  All appointments have been scheduled.  If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to call me.

The students will start a new story on Tuesday, November 19th.  It is called "Aaron's Gift."  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions and setting.  They will have the test for this story on Monday, November 25th.

Week of 11/11/13

We will be reviewing our comprehension skills on Monday (PSSA practice p. 132 and 133.)  They will also receive a PSSA terms paper on Monday.  On Tuesday we will be working on Informational Texts p. 134 - 138 and PSSA practice review p. 168 - 171.  On Wednesday we will be playing the Eggspert game to study the PSSA terms.  On Thursday we will be playing Jeopardy to review the PSSA terms.  They will have a test on Friday on the PSSA terms.  Make sure they study the terms!Have a great week! 

Week of 11/4/13

The students are working on the story "The All American Slurp."  The focus comprehension skills are drawing conclusions, theme, stated theme and implied theme.   The test will be on Friday, November 8th.  Have a great week!

Week of 10/28/13

On Monday, Mrs. Diane Rowland was here to talk to the students about not smoking.  We will continue to work on the story "Zlateh the Goat" in class.  They will have a test on this story on Friday, November 1st.  The focus comprehension skills are making inference, internal and external conflict and resolution. The story map from "Dragon, Dragon" is due on Wednesday, October 30th.

The Halloween parade and parties are from 1:30 - 3:00 on Thursday.

Week of 10/21/13

The students are working on the story "Dragon, Dragon."  The focus comprehension skills are making inferences, direct and indirect characterization, character traits and motives.  The students will have a test on Wednesday October 23rd.  This will be the last grade for the first marking period.  The students received their tests back.  They can get bonus points if they get each one signed.  On Wednesday, they will receive a story map for the story "Dragon, Dragon."  It is due on Wednesday, October 30th.  This will be the first grade for the second marking period.

Week of 10/7/13

On Monday the students will be reviewing plot, author's perspective, and tone. They will have a test on these skills on Tuesday, October 8th.  We will be reviewing the PSSA terms and author's point of view all week.  They will have a test on these two things on Friday.  Please make sure your child studies the PSSA terms.  We will use the game eggspert on Wednesday and Jeopardy on Thursday to review.  If they know the terms, it will be an easy 100 to help boost their grade.  Have a great week!!!   

Week of 9/30/13

The new stories for this week are "Names/Nombres" and "The Lady and the Spider."  The focus comprehension skills are fact/opinion and tone.  The students will have a test on fact and opinion on Wednesday, October 2nd.  The test for the stories will be on Friday, October 4th. 

The DARE mile is on Saturday, October 5th if anyone is interested.

Week of 9/23/13

We are starting two new stories on Tuesday, Sept. 24th.  The stories are "My Papa, Mark Twain" and "Stage Fright."  The focus comprehension skills are fact/opinion, author's perspective, narrator and point of view.  They will have a test on Friday, September 27th.  Have a great week!

Update 9/17/13

The students received three tests today.  If they get each page signed, they will receive bonus points at the end of the marking period.  The test for the two "Monkeys" stories will be on Monday, September 23rd.

Week of 9/16/13

The students are starting two new stories this week.  They are "Why Monkeys Live in Trees" and "The Case of the Monkeys That Fell From the Trees."   Our focus comprehension skills are fiction and nonfiction.  The test will either be on Friday, September 20th or Monday, September 23rd.  I will keep you posted.

Progress reports will go home on Friday, September 20th.  We have a pep rall on Friday also. 

Week of 9/9/13

The students will be starting a new story called "The Drive-In Movies."  The focus comprehension skills are making predictions, narrator and point of view.  They will have the comprehension test on Friday, September 13th.  The story map from "Stray" is due on Tuesday.

The Book Fair will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday.  The students may buy books during library class this week. (Our homeroom will be on Tuesday.)  Have a great week!!!

Week of 9/3/13

Welcome back to school!  The new sixth grade class is great!!!   I am looking forward to teaching them this year.  Our first story is called "Stray."  The focus comprehension skills are making predictions and plot (Exposition, conflict, rising and falling action, climax and resolution.)  The students will have a comprehension test on Thursday, September 5th.  On Wednesday, they will receive a paper to do a story map of "Stray."  This will be due on Tuesday, September  10th.

No school on Monday - Labor Day.  Pictures are on Friday, September 6th.  Have a great week!

Week of 5/6/13

We are reviewing comprehension skills on Monday.  On Tuesday, they will have a test on those comprehension skills.  On Wednesday, the students will be reading the play "Phantom Tollbooth."  We will be going to see the concert on Friday morning at the high school.  They have to do a story map for any story they would like to do.  It is due on Tuesday, May 14th and it counts as a grade.   Have a great week!

Week of 4/22/13

We will be working on Folk Literature (Unit 6) this week.  Our focus comprehension skills are cause/effect, folk tales and fables.  The stories we will be concentrateing on are "The Tiger Who Would Be King," "The Ant and the Dove,"  "The Lion and the Bulls" and "A Crippled Boy."  The test will be on Friday, April 26th.  Progress Reports will be handed out on Friday.  Have a great week! 

Week of 4/15/13

The last day of PSSA's is on Monday, April 15th.  The students were very hard workers.  I am so proud of them!  We will be starting Unit 4 - Poetry on Tuesday, April 16th.  We will be reading a lot of poetry.  Our focus comprehension skills are:  rhythm, rhyme, tone and free verse.  The students will have a test on "Oranges" and Ode to Family Photographs" on Friday, April 19th.  Have a great week!

Week of 4/2/13

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and break.  The students do not have school on Monday, April 1st or Tuesday, April 2nd.  This week we will be working on author's purpose (inform, entertain or persuade.)  We will also be working on words with multiple definitions.  They will have a test on these two skills on Friday, April 5th.  We will also be reviewing the PSSA terms.  The PSSA tests will start on Monday, April 8th.  Have a great week!

Week of 3/25/13

The students are working on the PSSA skills this week.  They will not have any tests this week.  I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Easter break.

Week of 3/18/13

The students will have a test on the PSSA terms on Tuesday, March 19th.  The field trip is on Thursday, March 21st.  They need to be at the lower level parking lot at the high school by 6:45 a.m.  They are to be picked up there around 5:30 p.m.  DARE graduation is on Wednesday.  The students are to be at the high school by 6:45 p.m.  Have a great week! 

Week of 3/11/13

The students are working on figurative language skills.  They are alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and idioms.  They will have a review on Tuesday.  Make sure your children are studying the figurative language definitions.  They will have a test on Wednesday, March 13th.   They will have a comprehension review on Thursday.  The skills are drawing conclusions, compare and contrast, theme and comparing author's style.  They will have a test on these skills on Friday, March 15th.  The field trip is now scheduled for Thursday, March 21st.   They need to report to the high school at 6:45 am and be picked up at 5:30 pm.  They need a ride both ways for the field trip.   They also need to study the PSSA terms.  They will have a test on these on Tuesday, March 19th.  Have a great week!

The students will be working on figuartive language skills.  This includes metaphor, simile, alliteration, hyperbole, personification and onomatopoeia.  They should be studying the PSSA terms.  They will have a test next week on these terms.  Have a great week!

Week of 2/25/13

The students will have a test on the story "The Pigman and Me" on Monday, February 25th.  The students will be working on the PSSA skills on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  On Friday they should bring in a Dr. Seuss book for a bonus point.  If they don't have one, they can borrow one from a friend and still get the bonus point.  We will be doing Dr. Seuss activities on Friday.  Have a great week!

Week o 2/11/13

The students will have a test on Monday on "Langston Terrace."  They will finish it on Tuesday due to the 2 hour delay.   Most students will also take a test on the prefixes and suffixes on Tuesday.  This is a second chance!  They will be working on PSSA terms and skills on Wednesday.  The Jump Rope for Heart is on Wednesday.  All students should wear sneakers.  The Valentine's Day party is on Thursday.  It is also electronics day if they brought in their permission slip. No school for students on Friday, February 15th and Monday, February 18th.   Have a great week!!!

On Monday, they will be working on PSSA skills. (p. 436 - p. 442)  We will be starting a new story on Tuesday.  It is called "Langston Terrace."  Our focus comprehension skills are main idea, biography/autobiography and author's influences.   The students will have a test on prefixes and suffixes on Wednesday, Febraury 6th.  They should study for this test.  The students are working on a story map for "Jackie Robinson."  It is due on Thursday, February 7th.   The test for Langston Terrace will be on Monday, February 11th.    They will be receiving new PSSA terms to begin studying.  Have a great week!

Week of 1/21/13

We will be starting a new story on Monday.  It is called "Water."  It is about Helen Keller.  Our focus comprehension skills are author's purpose and autobiographical essay.  Report cards will go home on Wednesday the 23rd.  We will be working on similes and metaphors on Friday.  Stay warm!  Have a great week!

Week of 1/7/13

The students will be reviewing the comprehension skills from Unit 2 on Monday. (making inferences, text aids and features, direct and indirect characterization and internal and external conflict)  They will have a test on these skills on Tuesday.  We will be reviewing vocabulary in contest, characterization and other comprehension skills on Wednesday.  They will have a test on vocabulary in context and characterization on Thursday.  They will have to write 25 character traits for the test.  They should study their list.  We will start Unit 3 on Friday.  The new story is called "Zlata's Diary."  Have a great week!
